Saltmarsh Doubles the Fun with Cook-Off and Volleyball Tournament

10/19/2018 - By Zachary Farrington

This year, we decided to double the fun and have a volleyball tournament following our annual cook-off to benefit Manna Food Pantries. This year’s theme was Disney, so dishes from Disney movies, theme park rides, and more made their way to the table. As always, the competition was fierce.

For the Appetizer category, Claire Poirier’s Tangled Braided Rosemary Bread earned the Judges' Most Original Award and People’s Choice, while Chelsie Lowry’s Ratatouille brought home the Judges' Choice Award.

In the Entrée category, Beth Varhalla won the Judges Choice Award and the People’s Choice Award for her Kalua Pork Sliders. Melanie Collin’s Woody Cowboy Casserole won the Judges' Most Original Award.

Finally, the Polynesian Delight Bread Pudding by Carol Gaines won her the Judges' Most Original Award, and the Mickey Oreo Truffles of Destini Cooper won the Judges' Choice and People’s Choice Awards. Destini also took home the prize in our “Best Mickey Mouse Ears” contest.

The event raised over $500 for Manna Food Pantries, so they can feed children, the elderly, and others in need of meals! Thank you to all those who cooked the food, decorated the Training Room, sampled the dishes and helped clean up. Everyone made the Cook Off a success.

After everyone took an hour or so to let their food settle, the volleyball tournament quickly got underway. The Champions of the Volleyball Tournament were Team Frozen:

  • Philip De Boer
  • Josh Strickland
  • Diane Martinez
  • Lori Gambill

Second place went to Beauties & Beasts who took Team Frozen to the final winner-take-all game but fell just a few points short of victory. The Beauties & Beasts team included Clint Allen, Johnny Holliday, Destini Cooper, and Meagen Rush

And the tax team consisting of Lisa Fairbanks, Caroline Beasley, Zachary Farrington, and Aaron Burdick came in third, even though they had to add in a few free agents at the last minute!
