New Requirements for SNF ABNs

2/6/2018 - By Claudia Reingruber, CPA

Effective May 7, 2018: New version of the Skilled Nursing Facility Advance Beneficiary Notice of Non-coverage (SNF ABN) is mandated - Form CMS-10055 (2018). CMS is encouraging earlier implementation.

SNF ABN must be issued:

  • To Part A beneficiaries under regular (Fee for Service) Medicare,
  • Prior to providing care that is usually paid for by Medicare,
  • When the SNF has determined the care is not medically necessary or reasonable, or is custodial care.

Discontinued use:

  • CMS will no longer allow the 5 SNF Denial letters to be used
  • The voluntary NEMB-SNF notice is also being discontinued and replaced by the SNF ABN.

The "SNF ABN (2018)" form and instructions may found here.

Our team of experienced healthcare consultants at Saltmarsh can help you:

  • Provide instruction as to When and to Whom a SNF ABN should be given.
  • Detail what "triggering events" would justify issuing a SNF ABN.
