Recent Improvements to Hospice Notice of Election (NOE)

6/21/2018 - By Claudia Reingruber, CPA

Good news! New improvements have been made to the Hospice Notice of Election (NOE).

Past Procedures

In the past, an error in the election date on a NOE meant the hospice had to cancel the incorrect election and then submit a replacement NOE. This situation would cause the original NOE receipt date to be lost and made it appear that the NOE was submitted after the 5-day timely filing period! To correct this, the hospice had to request an exception to the NOE timely filing requirement, which was an administrative burden.

New Procedures

Now, new procedures are here to help!

  • To correct an election date, the hospice can simply:
    • Submit another NOE, using the correct election date as the From, Admission dates and Occurrence Code 27 dates;
    • Must also include the original, incorrect election date on using Occurrence Code 56 and adding Condition Code D0 (zero).
    • The incorrect election date will be replaced by the correct information.
  • To correct a revocation date, the hospice can:
    • Submit another Notice of Termination/Revocation (NOTR) using the correct revocation date as the Through date.
    • The hospice must also submit the original, incorrect revocation date using Occurrence Code 56.
