Manufacturers: FL Sales Tax Holiday on Equipment Purchases

6/9/2014 - By Lisa Fairbanks, CPA

A sales tax holiday for manufacturers is a win-win for both the manufacturer's and the state of Florida! This is because when the sales tax on manufacturing machinery and equipment is eradicated, Florida's exports, businesses, capital investments and jobs will increase. Enterprise Florida predicts that this change will save our manufacturers around $141 million a year.

What qualifies for the sales and use tax holiday? Purchases of industrial machinery and equipment that is used in a Florida location during a three year period starting April 30, 2014 and ending April 30, 2017 is eligible.

What types of businesses are eligible? Businesses with NAIC industry codes starting with 31, 32, and 33 are eligible. This also counts for businesses that primarily manufacture food, apparel, metal, chemicals, plastic and other related materials. For further information about the certification process, visit www.myflorida.com/dor.

How do manufacturers take advantage of this sales tax break? At the time of purchase, the manufacturer would give a signed certificate to the vendor certifying they are eligible for this sales tax holiday.
